Project Overview

Critical Time Training delivers a national course in Critical Time Intervention, a structured, time-limited case-management practice used in community mental-health and social-work settings. CTI is conversational by nature: every encounter with a client is a back-and-forth, and a passive video course was never going to build the right reflexes.

The brief was to rebuild the course as an interactive experience. Every lesson became a clickable interactive video. An AI avatar instructor opens each chapter and learners can speak or type a question any time without leaving the player. Module 6 is the flagship: a roleplay with Marcus, an unhoused man at his encampment, where the learner speaks the conversation out loud and the AI scores the response against the CTI rubric in under a second.

A short tour. Learners land on the course home, click through the interactive curriculum, watch the AI avatar instructor open chapter 1, ask the avatar a clarifying question without leaving the page, then hit the Marcus roleplay and approach the encampment themselves. Every interaction is voice or text, scored against the CTI rubric the program team already uses in real coaching reviews.

The course ships on Teachable with the CTT brand carried across every page, certificate, and per-learner progress dashboard. (The migration off the team's prior LMS happened during the same engagement, with zero downtime and the learner roster preserved. That is a footnote, not the headline.)

What's Inside

AI avatar instructor in every chapter

A consistent avatar narrator opens each chapter and stays available the whole way through. Learners can interrupt with a question any time.

Speak or type input

Voice (streaming Whisper) or chat. Learners pick the mode that fits the moment, the avatar responds the same way either way.

Real-time evaluation against the CTI rubric

Claude scores every learner response against the same rubric senior CTT coaches use in 1:1 reviews. Feedback returns in under a second.

Clickable interactive lessons

Every lesson is a clickable interactive video. Chapter navigation, jump-to-phase, branching prompts, all in the player.

Flagship Marcus roleplay

A full conversational scenario with a named character (Marcus, unsheltered four years). Backstory, setting, do-not-do list, branching escalation paths, rubric-scored close.

Interactive tutorial overlay

An eight-step tutorial walks first-time learners through chat history, the mic, the chat input, pause/play, and avatar settings.

Branded Teachable course pages

Theme customised to the CTT brand. Course home, curriculum, instructor page, certificate, email templates.

Per-learner dashboard and certificate

Per-learner progress, module-level analytics, auto-issued certificate with a verification code, weekly digest to the program team.

What the Client Provided

  • The existing CTI curriculum (lesson scripts, videos, PDFs, handouts)
  • The CTI scoring rubric used in real CTT coaching reviews (Google Doc)
  • The Marcus character brief: backstory, setting, goals, do-not-do list
  • CTT brand guidelines, logo, and course imagery
  • Client availability for character review and rubric calibration sessions

Design and Build Process

01

CTI Rubric and Avatar Character Design

Sat with the CTI coaching team to translate the rubric they already use into a structured prompt the AI can score against. Authored the Marcus character card: backstory, encampment setting, goals, escalation paths, and a do-not-do list so the avatar stays in role and never breaks character to compliment the learner.

02

Interactive Lesson Authoring

Rebuilt every chapter as a clickable interactive video. Chapter navigation, jump-to-phase, branching prompts, and pause/resume all inside the player. Chapter intros cut in Premiere Pro and complemented with sourced B-roll plus AI-generated video, then handed off to the interactive layer.

03

AI Avatar with Voice + Chat Input

Built the AI avatar inside every chapter using custom code. ElevenLabs for the avatar voice, streaming Whisper for the learner mic. A single chat surface for type, click-a-prompt, or speak, so evaluation starts before the learner finishes speaking and the avatar feels responsive even on slow connections.

04

Real-Time Evaluation Against the CTI Rubric

Claude scores every learner response against the rubric in under a second, then routes the avatar's next turn (probe deeper, escalate, accept the close). Scoring matches what CTT coaches already write down in 1:1 reviews, so learners learn the same vocabulary they will hear from a human reviewer.

05

Teachable Course Build and Publish

Wrapped the interactive lessons inside a fully branded Teachable course. Theme, lesson pages, certificate, email templates, per-learner dashboard, weekly digest. Migrated the learner roster from the team's prior LMS with zero downtime, and shipped a Figma component library plus a runbook so the team can author new chapters without us.

Tools and Stack

AI Avatar
